Dr. Sara Currie Mansbach
Founder
Executive Director Emeritus
As a Family Literacy Specialist with a doctorate in Adult Learning and Reading from Boston University, Sara chose a career involved with marginalized students, motivating them to gain independence through literacy. She has been a college professor, a consultant, a school district coordinator, a media center manager, and a nonprofit executive director. In 2009 during a Rotary leaders’ meeting in Haiti, she experienced an epiphany, finding a new life purpose in developing book centers in Haiti’s rural villages where children had never seen a single picture book. She founded and led PILH [2011-2025], traveling to Haiti 14 times, passionate about how Creole books could transform young lives. For her work, she has won many humanitarian awards, but the Haitian librarians, teachers, parents and students, who are her colleagues and friends, have been the most meaningful part of her career. Today she is partnering with Haitians to encourage dual language writers through Kreyòl & Beyond and other prenatal to preschool Haitian literacy initiatives. Reading is the bridge to equity.
